Making a Difference Together

Today, I would like to share the story of a client whose life we were privileged to support right through to his final moments. For privacy reasons, we will refer to him as T.

T was a long-standing client of St John’s Care, and his presence at the centre brought immense joy and light to our staff, volunteers, and fellow clients. Whenever T came in for support, his warmth and positivity were felt by everyone around him.

T lived with several health challenges, including limitations to his mobility. Despite this, he never allowed his circumstances to define him. He always arrived with a positive spirit and a joyful presence that lifted others. Through St John’s Care, T received support with his utility bills (ActewAGL), PBS prescriptions, food, and ongoing case management assistance, including advocacy for a housing transfer and several other supports.

A few days before Christmas, T visited the centre wearing his bright, cheerful colours and carrying his usual positive energy. He received support with food as well as his Christmas hamper. None of us knew that this would be the last time we would see him or experience his joyful presence. The following day, we received the call no one ever wishes to receive - the news of T’s passing. He had passed away peacefully that morning, sitting at home and enjoying the fresh Canberra sunshine and breeze.

This came as a profound shock to us all. T had been at the centre just the day before, showing no signs that his journey was nearing its end. T will be fondly remembered for his impeccable sense of fashion - every outfit perfectly matched with his hat - his infectious positivity, the light he brought into every space, and his compassion for others.

While we mourn this loss, we are also deeply thankful. Your generosity made a real and lasting difference, and it is because of you that clients like T experienced compassion and support throughout their life. This is the impact of your giving, and it is something we never take for granted.
