12 WEEKS AND 12 COFFEES LATER!

It has been a very busy time at Raw Potential supporting many young people who are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness in the ACT. We are honoured that young people feel comfortable to turn to us for support. At the same time however, we are overwhelmed with the reality of the number of young people who are sleeping rough in Canberra. We have been supporting Jack, 17 (not his real name) for the past three months. Jack became homeless due to his mother’s misuse of alcohol, leading to physical and verbal aggression towards him on a regular basis. He went from friend’s house to friend’s house with little money as he was not receiving any income. At times, Jack had nowhere to go for th

We're getting ready for Christmas

With 35 days to go, we are busy here at St John’s Care getting ready for Christmas. Last year we saw 560 families in two weeks while the Christmas Present Room was open. This year we have already seen a spike in numbers of people that are in need coming into the Centre to receive food. Our Christmas Present Room will open on Tuesday 10 December and will close on Friday 20 December from 9.30am to 2pm (Monday to Friday). This year we are working together with Uniting Care Kippax and Canberra City Care to make sure that we can help as many people as possible during the Christmas season. Between the three charities we will be booking people in with an appointment time to ensure that we have the

Volunteers are our lifeblood

Last Saturday St John’s Care (SJC) held an Australiana Trivia night to raise funds for our Christmas Hampers this year. We are hoping to make 500 hampers with the money raised. The night was a great success with lots of laughter whilst our thinking caps were on! We would like to thank everyone who attended. They contributed towards making Christmas a little bit special for lots of our clients. It means so much to us to have the support of the community for our fundraising events. Another person who is a huge support to SJC is Fred Fawkes. Fred is a Northside Rotarian and a retired police officer who spends his life helping others. Just recently, we managed to house a few homeless people into

Christmas hampers made possible by the generosity of others

Christmas is meant to be a time of celebration, but if times are tough it can be especially challenging and isolating. This year St John's Care, Uniting Care Kippax and Canberra City Care are working together to make sure they can help as many people as possible during the Christmas season. People experiencing financial hardship or need assistance can receive a hamper from one of these three organisations. They need to provide a Health Care or Centrelink card that shows the members of their household to receive a hamper. The registration list is a shared document. Registrations for all three organisations open on Tuesday 26 November and hamper collections are between Monday 9 December and Th

Your donations at Christmas make a difference and bring joy

Christmas will soon be upon us and for some, rather than being a happy and joyful time, it is a time of stress and anxiety. For this reason, once again at St John’s Care we will have a Christmas Present Room and will give out Christmas hampers. This year we will be using a booking system so that we can ensure that everyone in need of help at Christmas receives it. Bookings will commence on Tuesday 26 November and the Christmas Present Room will open from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 19 December. Your cash donations are so important as it can mean the difference between eating or not eating on Christmas Day. And although Christmas isn’t only about presents, it is so wonderful for people to receive

Recognising the contribution of our volunteers

Without volunteers St John’s Care could not open the Emergency Relief Centre - Monday to Friday 9.30 to 2.00pm - for our clients who come seeking help. Volunteers are also integral when it comes to hosting our monthly community lunches i.e. cooking the meal, setting and cleaning up, waiting on tables, etc. There are also the unseen volunteers who do a range of tasks like collecting food at Shopping Centres, cooking frozen meals, tending the veggie gardens at the rear of the Centre, knitting scarves and beanies, plus many more wonderful contributions by so many people. This week we are recognising all the volunteers who work at St John’s Care. We are so grateful to all of you. Some of our vol
