A client in need

This week we assisted a client who was really struggling to cope with his current situation. He has four children and his partner has walked out and left the children with him. He receives limited Government assistance as his partner had full custody of their children until now. He was driving an unregistered car and was desperate for help with registration. He had many bills and had to give up work to look after his four children. Since he is not working and has just started on a single New Start payment, things are very tough. At the moment, this client had no capacity to pay off his outstanding bills. This is typical of many SJC clients who live from one Centrelink payment to the next. Em

Rough sleepers need respite from heat

This heatwave is almost unbelievable. We have had so many rough sleepers coming into St John’s Care to get out of the heat for a while. One client was so badly dehydrated that we supported him and assisted him in gaining medical assistance. He said he had applied for Centrelink assistance 6 weeks earlier and would probably have to wait a few more days before he received his benefit. As the conversation progressed, I worked out that he needed a

Help us to help others in 2019

We hope you all had an enjoyable break over the Christmas and New Year period. Here at St John’s Care we had a wonderful lunch on Christmas Day. There were around 300 people in attendance. We had 62 volunteers who helped to make the day special for all our guests. We had amazing food, music and a visit from Santa for the children who each received a gift. They even had a lolly bag to take home. Oz Harvest also delivered fresh food on Christmas Day. This enabled some of our guests to take home some food to keep them going over the Christmas break. A very big thank you goes to everyone who helped make it such a wonderful lunch, either by donating food or money, by preparing food beforehand, or
